Simple and Zesty Blood Orange Puff Pastry Tarts

You're going to want to make these blood orange puff pastry tarts while this jewel-toned citrus is still in season!

    Jump to Recipe

By now, you guys know that I'm a huge fan of store bought puff pastry sheets. These bad boys stay stocked in my freezer at all times! You just never know when you're going to need to whip up a quick treat or when you simply have a craving for something sweet (and don't want to do a bunch of dishes later)! A couple weeks back, I had made the Dairy Free Bread Made with Blood Orange and Cardamom I loved incorporating this beautiful citrus in that recipe and couldn't wait to use it again. I quickly put together these blood orange puff pastry tarts for you and hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Minimal ingredients needed for this recipe

    • 1 puff pastry sheet
    • half a block of cream cheese
    • ¼ cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 egg
    • 1 blood orange
    • ½ cup-1 cup confectioners sugar if you plan on making the glaze, which you totally should

When are blood oranges in season?

The prime season for blood oranges is between the months of December through May, sometimes til June. This can vary based on the type that you're purchasing.

    Cutting your puff pastry slices

I used a dough scraper to cut out 6 rectangular shapes but you could even use a pizza slicer (which I did recently for another fun and easy, upcoming recipe) or a regular knife. In the past, I've also used round, metal cookie cutters to make circular tarts. You can get real creative with this!

    Ingredients

    • 1 sheet puff pastry, store bought
    • 4 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
    • ¼ cup granulated sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 whisked egg for egg wash
    • 1 blood orange for zest and glaze

    Blood Orange Glaze

    • 1 juice of 1 blood orange
    • 1 cup confectioners sugar can use less based on desired consistency

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 425°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Place puff pastry sheet on baking sheet. Cut into 6 pieces. Brush outer edges of each piece with egg wash, leaving center dry to place filling on top. Set aside.
    • In a small bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, and as much blood orange zest as you'd like. Place cream cheese filling in centers of each puff pastry piece.
    • Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes. Outer edges should be a nice golden color. Make glaze while pastries are baking.

    Blood Orange Glaze

    • Combine blood orange juice and confectioners sugar in a small bowl. Drizzle over slightly cooled pastries. You can add more or less of the confectioners sugar based on your desired glaze consistency.

    Notes

I recommend storing these in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
