Born and raised in Salinas, California, an agricultural heartland, I’ve always been surrounded by an abundance of fresh produce. My grandparents, who emigrated from Mexico, instilled in me a deep appreciation for food and its roots. My grandpa, with his insatiable sweet tooth, was my earliest baking inspiration. Our shared moments over “cafe con cookies” are some of my fondest memories and a significant influence on my journey into food blogging.

Where this all began

I started The Bonnie Fig in August 2021. Initially, my blog was a melting pot of random recipes. However, I soon realized that to truly express my philosophy on food–centered around enjoying a variety of foods in moderation–I needed to refine my focus. Now, The Bonnie Fig is a celebration of California’s rich agricultural offerings. From figs to almonds, dairy to wine, and avocados to fresh seasonal produce, I aim to bring vibrant, fresh recipes to your table. Along with these, you’ll find handy guides like “how to freeze figs” and “how to reheat sourdough bread,” providing you with simple, practical tips to enhance your everyday cooking experiences.

My background

The diverse cultural influences in my life–from my Mexican heritage to my husband’s Filipino roots–mean you can expect an eclectic mix of recipes, blending traditional flavors with contemporary twists. Whether it’s a classic dessert or an inventive cocktail, there’s something for every palate.

Transitioning from a nurse to a full-time food blogger and mother has presented its challenges. Balancing the responsibilities of caring for a newborn while growing a blog was no easy feat but it has taught me the value of time management and the joy of sharing my love for recipe development and food exploration with my daughter. She loves being one of The Bonnie Fig’s official recipe testers!

The story behind the name

Why The Bonnie Fig, you ask? Well, I wanted a name that was catchy and spoke to my love for food. ‘Bonnie,’ meaning pretty, paired with my favorite fruit, seemed like the perfect fit. It’s a name that captures the essence of my blog–fresh, delightful, and inviting.
